Clare Stansfeld looks at high street fashion designer Betty Jackson.

When you consider spoiling yourself this season, do it with Betty Jackson, one of the ‘Designers at Debenhams’, with her stunning collection entitled ‘Black’. In reality, there is very little black in this collection that abounds with rich blues, vibrant oranges, soft camels and a particularly delightful sea green.

The last moments of the ‘hippy chic’ phase that swept the nation are still lingering in many shops, but Betty Jackson gives a sophisticated, grown up nod to the boho beads and giant belts as she takes the finer elements of this trend and adds them to clothes with classic lines and fitted waists. The result is a collection that strikes a perfect balance between being a grown up and still wanting to be pretty. Her colours are bold and determined and among the confident shades are occasional splashes of a more girlie soft peach. With such a variety of choice, there are infinite possibilities of looks waiting to be created.

A casual orange and white striped slash neck knitted jumper compliments one of her many pairs of cropped trousers, which are tailored and can look just as suitable for a business meeting as for a frolic in the sunshine. The detail of the tie on her tie front shrugs and cardigans flatters any shape and her belted trench coats are a perfect spring jacket, particularly the dark blue canvas reefer jacket. Try teaming her more bold and detailed looks with some basic items from your own wardrobe. The luxurious camel belted trousers would look clean and classic with a white t-shirt, or a black t-shirt with the gorgeous multi-striped chiffon skirt is bound to liven up any day. A personal favourite of mine is one of her many shift dresses, this one a sea green cap sleeve jersey dress with a plunging neckline and drape detail at the waist, tying at the back. It is this imaginative and subtle use of detail that separates this collection from the cluttered trends of the past year and the use of bright, new colours render the clothes fully fledged fashion must-haves that invite creativity and imagination.
