Tasty trimmings for spring’s styles from Rosie Duncan.

Gone are those dreary days when accessories were optional extras to make an outfit functional. Hair clips are no longer there just to keep your locks from your eyes, and bags aren’t around just to carry your purse and keys.

Once simply garnishing a garment, today these are fundamental fashion must-haves which can make or break a style. Slides and bands now prettily dress your tresses and venturing out without your handbag is a faux pas comparable to forgetting your top. Well, to female eyes, at least.

But with so much choice, where do we begin this season? There’s one rule to follow: big, bright and brash are beautiful. Statement jewellery, bags, clips and bits are back. Think bold beads, chandelier earrings and bling chains and you won’t go wrong.

Nicole Farhi hits the spot with a fabulous floral print silk bag, for £69. Black, greens, blues and cream combine to eye-catching effect. For added wow factor, throw a splash of neon into your get-up. From 1980s geek to 2006 chic, it’s going to be dazzling us this season.

If you’re not convinced, then go for the tasteful rather than the tacky. Benetton have done shrinking violets proud with a cream and pink canvas bag which combines the very now neutral hue with a smattering of look-at-me pink.

The key to this look is all in the detail – so make sure there’s lots of it. No décolletage should leave the house naked so be prepared to dress it in style. Necklaces are long, beads are big and chains are blingtastic. Anything goes, so take your pick.

Spring’s accessories are a godsend for figure-conscious ladies. The bigger the beads, wider the belt and chunkier the chain, the more petite your lumps and bumps appear. Magic

Miss Selfridge are flying high with their Diva range, offering us a gorgeous gold coloured disc and pearl necklace for a snip at £12. If beads, belts and bangles are more your bag, check out the huge range at Accessorize.

If you’re fretting about this influx of bold bits, there’s just one thing to remember. You can carry them off if you make your accessories the focal point of your style. Don’t over do it by wearing huge earrings and a neon bag with a bright print dress. Go for neutrals and dress them up.

Be bold, be beautiful and be you.
